SOCIETY FOR PEACE STUDIES AND PRACTICE (SPSP)
FOURTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Holding at Hydro Hotel, Minna, Niger State, Nigeria on March 29-31, 2010
THEME: DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA
Bad governance is responsible for the proliferation of violent conflicts around the world. Within this framework, good governance recommends itself as a conflict prevention strategy. This issue was particularly highlighted at the Millennium Summit of 2000, where world leaders resolved to "spare no effort to promote democracy and strengthen the rule of law, as well as respect for all internationally recognized human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the right to development" as part of the efforts to promote global peace and international security. It is a decade since this historic event. What is the fate of democratic governance in Nigeria? Where is the country at the present and where is it really going? What efforts are being made by local, national and external actors to deal with the existing challenges? What hope for the future? The 2010 Annual Conference and General Assembly of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice seeks to commit itself to finding proactive answers to these and many other questions with particular emphasis on the following sub-themes:
- Peace and governance theories
- History of democratization in Nigeria
- Democratic values and Rule of law
- Performance of state and civil society institutions
- Reform agendas
- Role of the security sector
- Elections and electioneering
- Leadership questions
- Conflict and conflict management
- Lessons from other parts of the world
